The newest coating from Benjamin Moore is called Advance, an alkyd-based interior paint powered by the brand’s Gennex waterborne colorant system. “Advance is truly an alkyd, not a hybrid,” said Carl Minchew, director of product development for Benjamin Moore, who explained that the new product delivers all of the performance demanded of an oil-based paint, yet has other characteristics common to latex. “Advance cleans up with soap and water and is as green as they come, with a low-VOC content of less than 50 grams per liter, which is well below the 250 to 500 count for most other alkyds, and with significantly reduced odor.”

Advance reflects Benjamin Moore’s advance on the technology in many ways. A mineral versus petroleum formulation of the alkyd is one of the key differentiators between Advance and the acrylic-based hybrids, according to the company. It is the mineral-based formulation that enables the water dispersion of the Benjamin Moore tints. Another of the advantages of the Benjamin Moore Gennex tints is that they are VOC-free, so Advance is low-VOC even after the colorant is added, and regardless the color choice, which numbers more than 3,300. Custom color matching also is available.

Though alkyd paint typically is preferred for trims, doors, furniture wainscoting, chair rails, base moldings and cabinetry, Advance is also being marketed as a wall paint, as well, with a flat sheen and primer soon to be added to a range that initially includes satin and high gloss.

PPG's aerospace transparencies group has been awarded a contract by Bombardier Learjet to design and manufacture heated glass windshields and side cockpit windows for the Learjet 85 aircraft. The contract calls for PPG to supply original equipment flight deck windows and aftermarket parts to Bombardier Learjet for operators of the Learjet 85 business jet.

The four windows will wrap around the cockpit to enhance visibility and aerodynamics, with the large windshields formed into complex, compound shapes. Three plies of Herculite II chemically strengthened glass will afford strong, lightweight transparencies. The windshields will be designed to resist impact by a 4-pound bird at 300 knots.

Rain-repellent Surface Seal coating on the windshields will maintain visibility in rain conditions, enabling Bombardier Learjet to eliminate windshield wipers on the aircraft to save weight and reduce aerodynamic drag.

New PR-1425CF chromate-free sealant by PPG used as the outboard moisture seal will provide ultraviolet and weather exposure resistance in an environmentally responsible formulation. Proprietary new PR-2060 sealant used as an internal moisture seal will provide an additional barrier to further reduce moisture ingress and extend service life, according to Scott. Highly resistant to moisture damage, S-123 urethane by PPG will be used as the interlayers to bond the glass substrates, affording more elasticity than vinyl to eliminate cold chipping and defend against delamination.

PPG is designing and will produce the windshields and side cockpit windows for the Learjet 85 aircraft at its Huntsville aircraft transparencies facility with deliveries expected to begin the first quarter 2011 to Bombardier Learjet's Wichita, Kansas facility.

Launched on Oct. 30, 2007, the new Learjet 85 aircraft will be the first Bombardier Aerospace jet and first business jet designed for type certification under U.S. Federal Aviation Administration FAR Part 25 to use composite materials for all external primary structures.

Industrial Nanotech has developed a nanotechnology-based thermal insulation coating capable of being applied to surfaces of at least 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Nansulate Extreme High Heat was developed as a result of a request by Saudi European Petrochemical Company, IBN ZAHR, a customer of the company's exclusive distributor in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Environmental Projects, Ltd, to insulate a 2.1 mile pipeline transporting high pressure steam.

"To date, we have successfully tested the coating on surfaces with temperatures up to 1004 degrees Fahrenheit (540 degrees Celsius)," said Stuart Burchill, CEO/CTO of Industrial Nanotech, Inc. "We have reason to believe the coating can also be used on surfaces with temperatures up to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit and will finish our due diligence in that extraordinarily high temperature environment over the next few months. Regardless of that outcome, the performance qualities of the product are more than satisfactory to meet the challenge presented to us in April of this year by our representatives in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Environmental Projects, Ltd. This opens up a whole new market to us which few, if any, other companies can pursue."

The Saudi European Petrochemical Company, IBN ZAHR, is an affiliate of the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). SABIC is one of the world's five largest petrochemicals manufacturers and the largest and most profitable non-oil company in the Middle East.
